Spring Bouquet Word of the Day

asphodel

This spring-blooming European bulb is a suitable candidate to salute in spring. The name is from Greek; the ancient belief that asphodels were the favorite food of the dead resulted in their being planted near graves. Modern daffodil, though a different plant, is derived from the word asphodel.

Red Pen Diaries: Zero Tolerance for Comma Splices

Are comma splices running rampant, or is it just me?

I keep seeing them in newspapers and magazines and on billboards and can't help but wonder if they, too, are now becoming acceptable, as have so many once-verboten grammar, ahem, alternatives before them. I sure hope not — as you might guess, I'm agin 'em. Click here to read the whole article...

Big Fish Word of the Day

coelacanth

It's just as well that this fish doesn't surface too often: its spelling and pronunciation are both counterintuitive. Once thought to be extinct, it now turns up from time to time in the world's oceans. Its name is a coinage from Greek roots meaning "hollow" and "spined."

When Typos are Set in Stone

Every writer knows the feeling: you've just released a carefully edited piece of prose into circulation, and when you take another look you cringe at the sight of a typo that you missed. With online writing, typos can very often be fixed without anyone even noticing. Printed errors usually require red-faced corrections. But don't feel too bad: imagine if your typos were etched in granite for all to see!

Shall We Dance? Word of the Day

terpsichorean

This adjective has no obvious handles unless you're clued up on Greek mythology, specifically on Terpsichore, the totally cool Muse whose brief was dancing. No photographs survive, but a Google image search rewards the time that it takes with some imaginative images. The last part of her name is also seen in choreography.

Moving with Deliberate Haste

President-Elect Obama has begun to assemble his nominees for Cabinet posts — something he had promised to do, in his first post-election press conference, "with all deliberate haste." If deliberate means "marked by careful consideration or reflection," and haste means "overly eager speed (and possible carelessness)," doesn't that make "deliberate haste" an oxymoron?

Early Klee

It seems to me that Paul Klee's early work never quite gets the spotlight it deserves. Here are few places I've found online that have early pieces:

Private Affair Word of the Day

poteen

Funny how the same substance can have different names, depending on whether the law smiles on it or not. Poteen is privately (and illegally) distilled whisky in Ireland, corresponding more or less to moonshine in US English. The word is Irish, natch, but related to English "pot" with a diminutive suffix on the end.

We asked David Wolman, author of Righting the Mother Tongue, to suggest a few books about English orthography and people who have dared to modify it. Here are his recommendations.
